Why Do Pilates?

Pilates is based on six principles: Centering, Concentration, Control, Precision, Flow and Breath. The work is performed on a mat as well as on apparatus equipped with spring resistance. This spring resistance allows for stretching and strengthening of tight and/or weak muscles, which in turn aids in realignment of imbalances within the body.

With verbal and tactile cuing from me, my students learn how to incorporate what they have learned in the studio into their everyday life. The result will be better postural awareness, a well-balanced physique, improved coordination and an overall sense of wellbeing making Pilates one of the most holistic workouts you will ever encounter.

Pilates for Dancers

As a young dancer working with Pilates Elder Kathy Grant, I experienced the performance enhancing benefits of Pilates early on as it helped me to sustain the level of fitness required of professional dance. However it wasn’t until I became an instructor did the work truly resonate with me on a more profound level. For the past nineteen years I have taught Pilates and the one thing that has impressed me the most is that whether you are an athlete preparing for the NYC marathon, a new mom working her way back to her pre-pregnancy shape or an 85-year-old grandmother rebuilding her strength after a fall, Pilates works for everyone.

And as our tech-driven world has increasingly appropriated our energy as well as our attention, I think the six principles of Pilates can help us find a way to reconnect to ourselves — to find our Center, Concentrate on what is important, Control our anxiety and become more Precise with our intention so we can go with the Flow and . . . Breathe.
